Key Scriptures
"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." (Genesis 1:1 KJV)
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made." (John 1:1-3 KJV)
"For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him." (Colossians 1:16 KJV)
Every house has a foundation.
A wise builder does not start with the roof. He does not begin with the windows. He begins with the foundation because everything else rests upon it.
If the foundation is weak, eventually the entire structure will suffer.
The same is true when studying the Bible.
Before we can understand Lucifer's rebellion, Adam's fall, the conflict between good and evil, or even the redemption found in Christ, we must begin with the foundation.
That foundation is God Himself.
The Bible does not begin by trying to prove God's existence.
It simply declares it.
"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth."
Those five words settle more questions than all the philosophy books ever written.
In the beginning, God.
Before there was a universe, God was there.
Before there were stars scattered across the heavens, God was there.
Before angels were singing around His throne, God was there.
Before there was time itself, God was there.
God did not come into existence.
God was not created.
God has no beginning and no ending.
The Lord told Moses:
"I AM THAT I AM." (Exodus 3:14 KJV)
Not "I was."
Not "I will be."
But "I AM."
God lives in an eternal present. Time does not rule Him. He rules time.
That is difficult for our finite minds to understand because everything around us has a beginning.
We were born.
Trees were planted.
Mountains were formed.
Stars were created.
But there has never been a moment when God did not exist.
The Psalmist wrote:
"Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God." (Psalm 90:2 KJV)
What a comforting truth for believers.
The God who holds our future is the same God who was there before creation ever began.
God Before Creation
Many people ask, "What was God doing before He created the universe?"
The honest answer is that Scripture does not tell us everything.
What it does reveal is that God existed in perfect fellowship within the Godhead.
John tells us:
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
Jesus Christ did not begin in Bethlehem.
He existed before creation.
The Holy Spirit existed before creation.
The Father existed before creation.
The triune God existed in perfect unity and fellowship.
God was complete within Himself.
He did not create because He was lonely.
He did not create because He needed servants.
He did not create because something was missing.
He created because it pleased Him.
Creation is an expression of His wisdom, power, and glory.
The Creation of the Heavenly Host
Before Adam walked in Eden, before birds filled the skies, before fish swam in the seas, God created the heavenly realm.
Paul tells us:
"For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible."
Notice the visible and the invisible.
Most people focus on the visible world.
We see mountains, oceans, forests, and stars.
But Scripture teaches there is also an invisible realm.
Angels.
Cherubim.
Seraphim.
Principalities.
Powers.
The heavenly host.
God created them all.
The angels were not eternal.
They were not gods.
They were not independent beings.
They were created by God and for God.
At some point before the creation of humanity, heaven was already populated by countless angelic beings.
The Lord asked Job:
"Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth... when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?" (Job 38:4,7 KJV)
The angels were present when the earth was formed.
They witnessed God's creative power.
They rejoiced at His handiwork.
They understood something that many people today have forgotten.
Creation belongs to God.
The Government of Heaven
One of the great themes of Scripture is that God is a God of order.
There is order in creation.
There is order in the family.
There is order in the church.
There is also order in heaven.
The Bible speaks of:
- Thrones
- Dominions
- Principalities
- Powers
These terms suggest organization and authority.
God's kingdom is not chaotic.
Nothing happens outside His knowledge.
Nothing occurs beyond His authority.
Even the angels operate under divine command.
When Gabriel came to Daniel, he came because God sent him.
When angels ministered to Christ, they came because God commanded them.
When judgment falls upon the earth in Revelation, it comes according to God's sovereign plan.
Everything in heaven operates under God's authority.
The throne of heaven is not vacant.
The throne of heaven is not contested.
The throne of heaven belongs to God.
That truth becomes important later in our study because Lucifer's rebellion centered on one thing.
He wanted a throne that did not belong to him.
God's Authority Over All Things
One of the greatest lessons we can learn from the opening verses of Scripture is that God owns everything He created.
The stars belong to Him.
The angels belong to Him.
The earth belongs to Him.
The nations belong to Him.
Our lives belong to Him.
We live in a world that constantly challenges God's authority.
People want freedom without responsibility.
Blessings without obedience.
Salvation without surrender.
But the Bible teaches that God is not merely the Savior.
He is Lord.
The same God who created all things has authority over all things.
Nebuchadnezzar learned this lesson the hard way.
After his pride brought him low, he finally confessed:
"And he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth." (Daniel 4:35 KJV)
Kings may rule for a season.
Governments may rise and fall.
Empires may come and go.
But God remains on His throne.
The world today often appears out of control.
Wars rage.
Violence increases.
Deception spreads.
Many wonder if evil is winning.
Yet the child of God must remember that none of this has caught God by surprise.
The Lord has never surrendered His throne.
He has never lost control.
He has never been defeated.
The God who spoke creation into existence still rules over His creation.
A Lesson From the Farm
I remember watching farmers prepare their fields each spring.
Long before the seed was planted, they spent time preparing the ground.
They knew that if the foundation were wrong, the harvest would suffer.
The foundation determined everything that followed.
The same principle applies to our understanding of Scripture.
Before we study Lucifer's fall, we must understand God's sovereignty.
Before we study rebellion, we must understand authority.
Before we study sin, we must understand holiness.
Before we study the creature, we must understand the Creator.
If we lose sight of God, we will misunderstand everything else in the Bible.
Final Thoughts
The story of creation does not begin with Lucifer.
It does not begin with angels.
It does not begin with humanity.
It begins with God.
He is the foundation upon which every truth rests.
Before there was a kingdom of darkness, there was the King of Glory.
Before there was rebellion, there was righteousness.
Before there was a serpent in Eden, there was a sovereign God upon His throne.
As we continue this study, remember this important truth:
Lucifer may rebel.
Adam may fall.
Nations may reject God.
But none of those things change who God is.
The throne of heaven remains occupied.
The Creator still rules His creation.
And one day every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
In our next chapter, we will examine one of the most fascinating beings ever created—the anointed cherub known as Lucifer, the son of the morning, before pride entered his heart and rebellion began in heaven.
