An Open Letter to Indiana Elected Officials

Dear [Representative/Senator/Treasurer],

I write to you not as a politician, nor as an economist, but as a country preacher who has spent a lifetime trying to rightly divide the Word of Truth and shepherd souls in the fear of God.

There are moments in history when a man must step back from the noise of politics and listen for a higher voice. This is one of those moments.

The Scripture tells us, "Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write grievousness which they have prescribed" (Isaiah 10:1). I cannot escape the weight of that warning as I watch the suffering unfolding in Gaza. Images of destruction, of families displaced, of children caught in the fire of war—these are not distant headlines. They are the cries of humanity, and Heaven hears them.

And if Heaven hears them, shouldn't we?

I understand that Indiana's investments in Israel Bonds are presented as sound financial decisions. But I have lived long enough to know that not everything profitable is right. The Word of God reminds us, "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" (Mark 8:36).

When the State of Indiana lends its resources, it does more than seek a return—it sends a message. It declares where we stand. And I fear that in this hour, we are standing too comfortably beside actions that many around the world are calling unjust.

The prophet Micah spoke plainly to leaders of his day: "He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?" (Micah 6:8). Justice, mercy, humility—these are not suggestions. They are requirements.

I am not writing out of hatred for any nation or people. God forbid. The Scriptures teach us that all men are made in His image. But neither can we close our eyes when that image is marred by violence and suffering.

A principle runs throughout the Bible: God holds nations accountable. He used Assyria, Babylon, and others as instruments—but He also judged them for their cruelty and pride. No nation stands above His Justice.

As a steward of public trust, you have been given authority for a season. And with that authority comes responsibility—not only to balance budgets, but to weigh decisions in the light of eternity.

I urge you, as one who must give account before God, to:

  • Reconsider Indiana's investment in Israel Bonds
  • Seek a pause or divestment until there is clear accountability for the suffering we now witness
  • Advocate for investment policies that reflect not only fiscal wisdom, but moral clarity

The Apostle Paul reminds us, "Abstain from all appearance of evil" (1 Thessalonians 5:22). Even the appearance of aligning with injustice should give us pause.

History will record what we did in this hour. But more importantly, Heaven already sees.

I pray that God grants you wisdom beyond politics, courage beyond pressure, and a heart tender enough to hear the cries of the afflicted.

Respectfully,

Pastor Larry G. Truitt

Thorntown, Indiana
