“Christ Above All Nations: A Biblical Response to Christian Zionism”

I ran across this Declaration and thought I would give my take on the subject.

Sermon Text Based on the Jerusalem Declaration on Christian Zionism

Primary Texts (KJV):

  • Galatians 3:28–29

  • Ephesians 2:14–16

  • John 18:36

  • Matthew 24:4

Introduction: A Call to Discernment

Folks, we are living in a time of confusion.

A time when political agendas are preached as if they were the Gospel.
A time when loyalty to nations is sometimes elevated above loyalty to Christ.
A time when many sincere believers are asking:

“What is our responsibility as Christians in relation to Israel?”

In 2006, a group of Christian leaders in Jerusalem issued what is known as the Jerusalem Declaration on Christian Zionism. Their purpose was not political—it was pastoral and biblical.

They issued a warning.

A warning that Christian Zionism is not rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ, but in a theological system that distorts the Gospel and divides the Body of Christ.

And today, we must examine this not through politics…
not through emotion…
but through the Word of God.

I. The Warning of Christ: “Take Heed That No Man Deceive You”

Matthew 24:4 (KJV)

“Take heed that no man deceive you.”

Jesus did not begin His teaching about the last days with war…
He began with deception.

And beloved, deception is most dangerous when it wears religious clothing.

Christian Zionism often presents itself as:

  • Biblical

  • Faithful

  • Necessary to bless God

But the question is not how it appears…

The question is: Does it align with the teaching of Christ?

II. The Heart of the Declaration: Christ Is the Center—Not a Nation

The Jerusalem Declaration makes this clear:

The promises of God are fulfilled in Jesus Christ—not in political systems or modern nation-states.

Let us go to Scripture.

Galatians 3:28–29 (KJV)

“There is neither Jew nor Greek… for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”

Do you see it?

The promise is not ethnic.
The promise is not political.
The promise is Christ-centered.

The true children of Abraham are not defined by land…
They are defined by faith in Jesus Christ.

III. Christ Broke Down the Wall

Ephesians 2:14–16 (KJV)

“For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition…”

Jesus did not come to elevate one group over another.

He came to:

  • Tear down division

  • Unite humanity

  • Create one new man in Himself

Christian Zionism often rebuilds the wall Christ tore down.

It says:

  • This people has priority

  • This nation must be defended above all

  • This land is the center of God’s plan

But Christ says:

“I am the center.”

IV. The Danger: Replacing the Gospel with a Political Agenda

The Declaration warns that Christian Zionism:

  • Confuses biblical prophecy

  • Supports injustice uncritically

  • Aligns the Church with worldly power

And here is the danger, church:

When the Church aligns itself with political power,
it loses its prophetic voice.

History proves it:

  • When the Church aligned with empire—it lost purity

  • When the Church aligned with nationalism—it lost compassion

  • When the Church aligned with violence—it lost Christlikeness

And today, many are silent in the face of suffering because:

They have confused political loyalty with spiritual obedience.

V. The Kingdom of Christ Is Not of This World

John 18:36 (KJV)

“My kingdom is not of this world…”

Jesus did not come to establish:

  • A political state

  • A military kingdom

  • A national empire

He came to establish a spiritual kingdom.

A kingdom:

  • Not built with weapons

  • Not defended by armies

  • Not defined by borders

But built through:

  • The cross

  • The resurrection

  • The transforming power of the Holy Spirit

VI. A Call to the Church: Return to Christ

The Jerusalem Declaration calls believers to reject teachings that:

  • Elevate land over Lord

  • Nation over Savior

  • Politics over Gospel

And instead, to return to:

Christ alone.

Let me say it plainly:

We are not called to defend nations.
We are called to proclaim the Gospel.

We are not called to justify violence.
We are called to walk in the Spirit of Christ.

We are not called to take sides in worldly conflicts.
We are called to stand for truth, righteousness, and mercy.

VII. What Should Our Response Be?

  1. Love all people—without partiality
Jew, Muslim, Christian—Christ died for all.

  2. Speak truth—even when it is unpopular
Silence in the face of suffering is not righteousness.

  3. Reject deception
Test every teaching by the Word of God.

  4. Lift up Christ—not nations
He alone is Savior. He alone is Lord.

Conclusion: Christ Above All

Beloved, this is not about being against a people.

This is about being faithful to Christ.

The Gospel is not:

  • “Support this nation and be blessed”

The Gospel is:

  • “Repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ”

The hope of the world is not found in:

  • Governments

  • Armies

  • Alliances

It is found in Jesus Christ alone.

Closing Appeal

Let us examine our hearts.

Have we:

  • Replaced Christ with ideology?

  • Replaced truth with tradition?

  • Replaced the Gospel with politics?

Today is the day to return.

Return to:

  • The cross

  • The Word

  • The Spirit

  • The truth

Closing Prayer

Father,

Give us discernment in a time of deception.
Help us to see clearly through the confusion of this world.
Keep our hearts anchored in Christ alone.

Teach us to love all people without compromise,
to speak truth without fear,
and to stand firm in Your Word.

Let the Church be the Church again—
not divided by nations,
but united in Christ.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
